How MTN MoMo’s Transformative Partnership with Buganda Kingdom is
Empowering Uganda’s Youth Through Tradition and Technology
At Janan Secondary School in Bombo-Kalule, the Ekisaakaate Kya Nnabagereka (EKN) 2025 has
emerged as a transformative platform for young Ugandans, fostering leadership, cultural pride, and digital
innovation. Powered by a robust partnership between MTN Mobile Money (U) Limited (MTN MoMo) and
the Buganda Kingdom, this year’s edition underscores the seamless integration of cultural heritage and
cutting-edge technology.
For over 17 years, the Ekisaakaate Kya Nnabagereka has instilled foundational values in Uganda’s youth,
shaping them into future leaders. This year, MTN MoMo’s contributions have elevated the program’s
impact. A cumulative contribution of UGX 80 million—UGX 15 million donated during the launch in August
2025 and an additional UGX 65 million for this year’s activities—has provided critical support.
Beyond funding, this partnership champions digital literacy and cultural enrichment. MTN MoMo facilitated
internet connectivity at Janan Secondary School, ensuring a seamless digital experience for participants.
Through the Digital Access and Literacy Project, the MTN Foundation’s ICT Bus was deployed to deliver
coding workshops and digital skilling sessions, equipping the basaakaate with essential 21st-century
skills.
MTN MoMo’s contributions included the donation of 20 laptops and 13 cell phones to support coding
training and digital skilling. These tools enabled participants to explore career opportunities in technology,
from software development to data analytics. Additionally, mentorship sessions led by MTN MoMo teams
guided participants on leveraging technology responsibly and effectively.
Workshops on cybersecurity and netiquette further highlighted the importance of online safety and
respectful digital interaction. Teaching the basaakaate how to navigate the digital landscape responsibly
emphasized that the internet is not just a tool but a shared space requiring care and accountability. The
children were empowered with the knowledge to protect themselves online while fostering respectful
communication in the digital realm.
MTN MoMo’s involvement went beyond technology, addressing broader aspects of youth development.
Sessions on mental health, self-love, and confidence-building were designed to nurture resilience and
emotional intelligence among participants. The MTN MoMo facilitators found the experience deeply
fulfilling, noting how their engagement created meaningful connections with the basaakaate and
reinforced the importance of guiding young minds towards growth and self-awareness.
Branded giveaways, including shirts, bottles, and aprons, added a celebratory touch, while conversations
on the harsh realities of bullying and the importance of creating safe spaces resonated deeply with the
basaakaate.
Andrew Adrian Mukiibi, Manager at the Nnabagereka Development Foundation, remarked: “MTN MoMo
has greatly enhanced our ability to deliver on this year’s Ekisaakaate promise of integrating culture with
technology. Participants have had a hands-on experience of envisioning their culture in the digital space.”
Precious Nayiga, Legal Advisor at MTN Mobile Money U Limited and a coordinator at this year’s program,
reflected on the journey: "Partnering with the Nnabagereka Development Foundation is always an honour
for us, and as such, coordinating the Ekisaakaate program this year has been an incredibly rewarding
experience. Witnessing the enthusiasm and engagement of the participants, and seeing the positive
impact the program has had on our community, has been truly inspiring. We as MTN MoMo are grateful
for the opportunity we had to participate in the mentorship of the basaakaate, over and above the cash
contributions and the non-cash contributions.”
As the Ekisaakaate concludes on January 20, 2024, the partnership between MTN MoMo and the
Buganda Kingdom stands as a testament to the power of community-driven corporate engagement.
Through its comprehensive contributions—financial support, technological resources, and
mentorship—MTN MoMo has solidified its role as a cornerstone of cultural and socio-economic
advancement in Uganda.
By blending tradition with innovation, the 2025 edition of Ekisaakaate Kya Nnabagereka exemplifies how
collaborative efforts can empower the next generation to navigate a rapidly evolving world. As participants
leave Janan Secondary School, they carry with them not just memories but also the skills and values
needed to shape a brighter future.
